Here you will find the annual program of (memorial) events in the context of the Battle of Arnhem.

In addition to the official established commemorations at

Oosterbeek and Heelsum (September 17)

Arnhem (September 20)

Ede-Ginkel Heath and Driel (September 21)

Oosterbeek (September 22)

several other events take place in the region.

A few events have not been confirmed so far; it can be expected that extra attention will be paid to the 75th anniversary.

The SAH makes every effort to keep dates and times as up-to-date as possible. No rights can be derived from the data for 2019.

Outdoor exhibition Arnhem Boys

Photographer Richard Jopson has interviewed and captured on camera the last surviving Battle of Arnhem veterans over the past years. In light of the 75 years Battle of Arnhem commemoration, these unique photos will be displayed near the Airborne Museum in Hartenstein park.

Arnhem Boys is a unique collection of testimonials from the last living Battle of Arnhem eye witnesses. The exhibition is free of charge and accessible from  August 29 until the end of September.

White Ribbon Mile

The White Ribbon Mile is a walk through the plains near the Old Church towards the remembrance monument at the river Rhine. It marks the retreat of the British and Polish soldiers after the failure of the Battle of Anhem. The route is signed by a white ribbon.

September 11

Lecture by Robert Kershaw

British author Robert Kershaw wrote a classic called It never snows in September in which Kershaw provides a detailed description of Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Arnhem from the German perspective. For his book he interviewed a lot of German soldiers who were present during the operation, including Heinz Harmel, the 10th SS-Panzer-Division SS-Brigadeführer. Kershaw will give a lecture on the German perspective in the museum.

15 september

Remembrance Church service with choirs from NL and USA

A special protestant (Dutch) service at the Eusebius church at Arnhem, to commemorate the moment the Battle of Arnhem began in September 1944. At the same moment there was a church service here as well. Eusebius church open at 09.00 hrs. Free entrance. Information:

Lecture by Anthony Beevor

In his book Battle of Arnhem he describes the unfortunate fates of soldiers and civilians and he gets rid of the myths surrounding the Battle of Arnhem using new archive material. Arnhem, the battle for the bridges appeared in 2018 and because of the successful lecture he gave in that year, Beevor will once again tell about his book.

Unveiling Landmark Ginkel Heath

On the 18th of September 1944 around 15.00 hrs 120 Dacota’s dropped over 19.000 parachutists and approx. 400 containers in Dropzone Y at Ede. Now, 75 years later a six meter high Landmark “Window to the past” sculpture will be unveiled.

Dilip Sarkar’s new book Arnhem 1944: The Human Tragedy of the Bridge too Far is published in May 2019. Sarkar will speak about his research and project at the Airborne Museum on 18 September.

Closure Airborne 2019 Commemorations

Polish rivercrossing Driel – 75 years bound by friendship and gratitude

The closing event of the 2019 commemorations will consist of a river crossing by military staff of 6 Airborne Brigade from Poland. This crossing honours the Poles who died in September 1944 trying to help the British troops in the Oosterbeek perimeter.

Near the river Rhine a basecamp will be erected where veterans and officials, as well as a great audience can witness the event. There will bands playing, static shows of 6 Airborne Brigade, 11 Air Mobile Brigade and re-enactors as well as several other activities.
